While the new construction or remodeling process is indeed very involved it doesn't have to be overwhelming. The keys to a successful and satisfying process are planning and organization. Here are a few suggestions which should help.

Seriously consider how you want your new kitchen to fit into your lifestyle. Categorize your thoughts into the three F's - Function, Form, Financial.

Function - This is the area that involves how food is stored and prepared, who prepares it, how and where it is served, and other activities that take place in the kitchen, such as entertaining.

Form - Dream kitchens normally are statements of a person's sense of form. What colors do you like? Do you want a special wood species? Do you like contemporary or more traditional design? What countertop materials do you find most attractive?

Financial - While all of us would like an unlimited budget for our dream project the reality is that very few of us have that capability. Therefore knowing what you can afford is a critical part of your planning. Also, prioritizing your "must haves" versus your "it would be nice" options makes the decision process a lot easier.

Organize all of the photos, articles, pieces of literature and other materials which represent ideas you might like to see in your new kitchen. Also, you may consider jotting down ideas or features you have liked in a neighbor or friend's kitchen or in another showroom you have visited.

Think about who will do the installation work. Maybe you are a capable D.I.Yer. Most people use a professional installer and subcontractors (plumbers, electricians, etc.). Recommendations from satisfied customers are extremely important. If you don't have a preference we would be happy to help you find qualified professionals.

Take some basic measurements of your kitchen or get an extra copy of your blueprint if you are building a new home. Any conversation with a kitchen designer will be much more productive if the type and size of the space is known at the first meeting. For some measuring tips, click here.
